Irish food manufacturer Kerry Group has declined to comment on reports it is in talks with Unilever over a potential deal for the group’s Peperami meat brand.

Reports emerged in July that Unilever was looking for a buyer for the snack brand as part of its strategy to find ways of sharpening its food portfolio. The consumer goods giant was understood to have appointed investment bank UBS to help conduct the sale, although it has declined to confirm any reports claiming the business is up for sale.

A report in The Huffington Post today (14 October) claimed Wall’s sausages manufacturer Kerry is among a “small group” of bidders for the brand. However, a spokesperson for the firm declined to comment.

When speculation over the future of Peperami emerged this summer, Euromonitor analyst Ildiko Szalai told just-food Kerry could be a potential buyer. The Irish firm has a UK subsidiary, Mattessons, which manufactures processed-meat based products, particularly sausages and pâté. Peperami could sit nicely alongside its Fridge Raiders line, she suggested.

Peperami, a spicy pork salami, is manufactured by Unilever in Germany, Mexico and the UK. In Germany it trades under the name BiFi.

Unilever, which has seen its non-food business grow faster than its food operations in recent years, has been gradually offloading food brands. When contacted by just-food today after the report from The Huffington Post, a spokesperson for Unilever declined to comment.
