Kraft Foods has started talks with Cadbury staff over the possibility of making around 150 job cuts at sites in the UK.

The consultation, which began on Monday (1 March), is expected to take around 90 days to complete and will involve jobs at Cadbury’s head office in Uxbridge and at its historic Bournville site being put at risk.

A spokesperson for Cadbury told just-food today: “Kraft Foods itself is headquartered in Illinois in the US, and from 8 March, Cadbury plc will be delisted from the FTSE, so Cadbury itself won’t exist.

!That naturally lends itself to a review of Cadbury’s central functions like finance, legal, corporate affairs, which are under review.”

However, the spokesperson was keen to stress that the consultation may lead to jobs being saved as Kraft looks to “identify opportunities to retain Cadbury people”.

“They are adopting a ‘best-of-both’ approach,” the spokesperson said.

Responding to the news, Jennie Formbie for Unite, the union representing Cadbury workers, said that Kraft is moving with “indecent haste” to cut jobs.

“Despite stating that the company would take 45 days to gain a clearer idea of their management and staff structures for the combined business, they have swung the axe before that deadline has been passed.”

She added: “This is yet another broken promise from Kraft.  It is causing tremendous anxiety among the 6000 plus workforce at Cadbury, as well as for their colleagues at Kraft’s UK plant. No worker now feels safe.”

Kraft was unavailable for comment when contacted by just-food.
