Discount retailer Lidl has today (13 December) confirmed that it plans to open its ninth distribution centre in the UK.

Lidl will submit a joint planning application with Hampshire landowner Barker-Mill Estates at the end of the week to Test Valley Borough Council and Southampton City Council for the new distribution centre. If the application is approved, the centre will be located south of Brownhill Way in Nursling, Southampton.

The retailer signed a deal with Barker-Mill Estates for the proposed site last year. Lidl currently services its south coast outlets from distribution centres in London or Weston Super Mare

The Southampton warehouse will allow Lidl to serve an area from Poole and Bournemouth, up to Newbury and across to Brighton, it said.

The centre is expected to create up to 400 jobs in the area. A spokesperson for Lidl did not disclose the financial cost of the centre but said it is a “significant investment”.

Lidl regional property director Oliver McGuinness said: “For a considerable time now we have been aware of the benefits a regional distribution centre positioned on the outskirts of Southampton would have to our distribution system. The land south of Brownhill Way provides us with excellent links across the south coast, which will allow us to shorten journeys creating a more sustainable distribution network.”
