Convenience store chain Londis is to open around 100 stores this year as independent retailers join the group in a bid to survive competition from UK supermarket group Tesco.

Londis retail director Tony Riddy said that Tesco’s acquisition of convenience store chain T&S Stores last year had led to an increase in independent retailers joining Londis, reported Retail Week.
Londis also plans to test a store format this autumn, with more emphasis on fresh and chilled goods, Riddy said.
Londis, which operates 2,300 stores, recorded wholesale turnover up 4% to £511m (US$812.7m) for the year to 31 January.
