Peter Roberts of Derby was found guilty at Nottingham Crown Court today [Wednesday]. A second defendant, Brian Paul Davies of Greater Manchester, was cleared of a similar charge. Three others, who all deny conspiracy to defraud, are still waiting to hear if they will be found guilty or not.

The prosecution in the case claim that Denby Poultry Products, based in Derbyshire, was at the centre of a scam that involved trimming down unfit chicken and turkey carcasses and selling them on as legitimate poultry meat, reported BBC News Online.

The prosecution said that between 1995 and 2001, more than a million pounds of unfit poultry was supplied into the human food chain. Wholesalers who bought poultry from Denby supplied meat to supermarket firms Sainsbury’s and Tesco, as well as Islington Borough Council.
