UK food and clothing retailer Marks & Spencer has reported a 5.1% rise in like-for-like food sales in the first quarter.
The company said total food sales for the 15 weeks to 12 July were up 8.1%.
Overall the company’s sales rose 5.4%, or 3.8% on a like-for-like basis. Marks & Spencer said the timing of Easter and associated promotional activity contributed 1.2% to the rise in general sales and 1.5% to the rise in food sales.
The company said food performance was ahead of the market, through progress of like-for-like sales and the increasing contribution from the roll-out of new Simply Food stores.
