The job losses will come from Milk Link’s Kirkcudbright plant in Scotland and a second facility in Devon.

The job cuts are believed to be blamed on the loss of supermarket contracts. Milk Link refused to be drawn on any contract losses and said the cuts were due to a “restructuring and refocusing’’ of the two long-life milk processing facilities.

The news comes after Milk Link and First Milk last month agreed not to proceed with a proposed merger between the two companies.

“Following the undertaking of a detailed strategic review of our long life milk operations, we will be implementing a major programme of measures to ensure the continuing long-term profitability of the business,” said a spokesperson for Milk Link.

“We will obviously strive to keep these to a minimum but they will be needed to ensure that our remaining business is profitable and to protect as many jobs as possible for the future.’’

The company’s Devon facility will now focus on the production of all of Milk Link’s standard long-life milk for major retail and food service customers.

Kirkcudbright will focus solely on producing added-value, extended shelf-life milks such as Mars, Flora Pro active and Lactofree, cream portions and long-life creams.
