Niall Trafford, the company’s head of retail design, said the new format was aimed at creating food halls with the “mind of a supermarket but soul of a deli”, reported The Grocer.

In order to achieve this, the refurbishments will include the introduction of wider aisles, darker fridges and fittings, and improved ceiling lighting.

The revamp forms part of the company’s efforts to boost ailing sales. M&S has also cuts its food offer by 12% to 4,000 products in its bigger stores at 1,000 products in its smaller outlets.
