Beleaguered high street retailer Marks & Spencer has been voted fourth preference by consumers in terms of food purchases, according to the results of market research company Mintel‘s latest consumer choice survey.

Among the 2,000 shoppers questioned by Mintel in the H1 of this year, M&S came in fourth favourite for food, behind supermarket groups Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda.

The firm was the preferred choice for 41% of shoppers, meanwhile, when it came to basic clothing goods such as underwear and socks.

Only two months ago, M&S hit the headlines when it announced that its 20 stores in mainland Europe would be closed down so it could concentrate on reviving its core business in Britain. Sales had plummeted and financial results revealed that the firm had lost over £100m (US$144.1m) in just two years.
