Marks and Spencer has remained silent on rumours that it has received mounting interest from competitors looking to take over stores that the UK retailer has marked for closure.

“What will happen to the stores is not something we can discuss while employee consultations are ongoing,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

Sales at M&S have suffered in the economic downturn as consumers have turned to cheaper retailers, prompting the group to cut costs from the business.

Earlier this month, M&S announced plans to close 27 outlets, mainly from the Simply Food portfolio.

M&S is said to have appointed commercial property group CB Richard Ellis to oversee the disposals.
