One year on from the creation of the Advanced Ingredients Group (AIG), incorporating nutrition, encapsulation and delivery systems, healthcare, transdermal adhesives and personal care products, National Starch has seen a number of key changes.

With the functional food industry experiencing continued growth – estimated to be US$47.6bn, up from around US$30bn in 1995 – National Starch is expanding its research into new product innovations with launches to be announced later this year. Important new appointments strengthen National Starch’s position and help the business focus on developing further opportunities in new applications.

Following the appointment of Rhonda Wittwer as business development manager, Nutrition, USA, in 2001, Pauline Taggart has been appointed business development manager, Nutrition Europe. Formerly technical manager for National Starch’s Food business in Europe, Taggart’s main objective is to provide support for the European sales and technical service team and drive continued growth of National Starch’s nutritionally positioned carbohydrates.  Taggart is based at the company’s European technical centre in Hamburg, Germany.

Commenting on AIG’s first year, Mike Croghan, business director, Nutrition, said: “2002 has seen strong growth for National Starch’s nutrition business.  The successful launch last year of Novelose 260 – an enzyme and process tolerant starch with a total dietary fibre content of 60%* – has set the scene for future carbohydrate innovations.  Further developments in physiologically functional ingredients are currently underway, particularly in the area of gut wellness.”

As the leading expert in both natural and synthetic polymer chemistry, National Starch is at the forefront of research and development in carbohydrate nutrition. The company supplies its functional ingredients globally and is represented in 36 countries worldwide. As a division of the ICI-owned National Starch & Chemical Company, the Advanced Ingredients Group supplies a full range of speciality ingredients to the nutrition, encapsulation and healthcare markets.
