UK online retailer Ocado is to open a distribution site in Oxford that is set to create up to 170 jobs.

Ocado has acquired the freehold for the 2.3 acre site at Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire, which it said today (4 August) is expected to handle around 10,000 orders per week.

Work to upgrade the 43,000 sq ft warehouse and office space and make it ready for operation will begin with immediate effect, with the changes expected to be complete in November. The new site will operate 65 vans at peak capacity, adding to Ocado’s current fleet of 770.

The facility will serve the existing delivery geography and will also take capacity from Ocado’s regional distribution sites in Weybridge and Coventry, as well as its central Hatfield base.

“We are fully focussed on increasing our capacity to meet customer demand, and to drive further strong growth and first-class service,” said Ocado CEO Tim Steiner. “This new distribution spoke site, which will be our third this year when it opens in November, clearly demonstrates that.”
