The pea shoot, the tip of a ten-day-old pea plant, tastes the same as conventional peas but should be easier to eat due to its leaf-like shape.
The shoots, which are available in some specialist Chinese food shops as dau miu, are set to reach the mainstream now they are available at UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, reported The Times Online. The shoots are grown in West Sussex and are being sold for £1.39 (US$2.58) per pack.
“Peas are one of the nation’s favourite vegetables but can be quite tricky to eat,” Sainsbury’s fresh-produce buyer, Clancy McMahon, was quoted by The Times as saying.
