Researchers at Newcastle University studied the diets of 200 children aged 11 and 12, then studied their diets again 20 years later, and found that as adults the participants consumed twice the amount of fruit and vegetables and less fat and sugar than they ate as children, reported BBC News Online.

However, as adults some participants felt they did not have enough time to eat healthily, believing fruit and vegetables needed more time for preparation than less healthy alternatives. Other factors influencing diet were parents, partners and children.

Amelia Lake, who led the research, said the study suggested that some healthy eating messages were getting through to people.

“Work from this study has shown that children who were high fruit and vegetable consumers maintain this intake into their early thirties,” Lake was quoted by the BBC as saying.
