UK plant-based start-up Daring Foods has secured a distribution deal and is in advanced talks with a major supermarket group just a year after starting out.

The Glasgow-based company, which specialises in chicken-free burgers, has sold a distribution deal with Lomond Fine Foods, which will see its range reach 300 outlets – mainly restaurants in central Scotland.

Daring foods, founded by former corporate banker Eliott Kessas and entrepreneur Ross Mackay, is now negotiating a deal to supply its range to an as yet unnamed supermarket chain. Mackay told just-food the deal could be finalised by March.

“We have had very successful conversations with all the major retailers,” he added. “Retail is a huge part of our business.”

The company, which has a production and R&D facility at an unnamed location in mainland Europe. has plans to become “one of the UK’s fastest-growing food firms and a major force in the plant-based food market” and is targeting year one revenues of more than GBP7m (US$9.01m).

The Daring Foods range includes the Moo-Free Burger and Cluck-Free Fried burger which are dairy- and egg-free and also contain no palm oil, genetically modified organisms, hormones or antibiotics.

Mackay said: “Our products provide nutritional value with minimal environmental impact and without sacrificing taste or experience. 

“We believe our branding and marketing helps us to stand out above the crowd.

“Also, a lot of products out there are frozen while we are fresh.”
