A new report published by the Food Standards Agency Scotland has highlighted the need for food outlets in the country to increase their standards of hygiene.

Around five years ago, 21 died during an outbreak of E-coli 0157 in Wishaw, and the population is more concerned about the effects of food poisoning than the potential health risks associated with mad cow disease or GM food.

Overall, more than 750,000 people in Scotland suffered from some form of food poisoning over the last year. Of these, 75% claimed that the illness was caused by food consumed in places other than home, and over 50% admitted that the standards of hygiene in food service establishments was an important personal cause for concern. This figure is up 10% from 2000, said the Agency.

The Agency revealed the figures as it announced plans to invest £20m (US$28.6m) in an advertising campaign to persuade food outlets to up food hygiene standards throughout Britain.
