Local producers are seeking the EU’s “protected geographical indication” status for Lincolnshire pork sausages, a move fiercely contested by other manufacturers.

Local producers, led by Spalding-based George Adams, argue that only Lincolnshire butchers know how to make the product, known for its coarse texture and sage, reported The Financial Times.

“We have been disappointed with the quality and variability of Lincolnshire sausages from manufacturers outside the region. Consumers are left with a poor imitation,” the company’s Graham Booth was quoted by the FT as saying.

However, national manufacturer Kerry Foods, which makes Wall’s Lincolnshire sausages, hinted it would oppose the move.

“We are the number one brand and the market speaks for itself… This is a national recipe and has been for generations. We want to maintain our brand,” the company said.

The Lincolnshire Forum for Agriculture and Horticulture has backed the move.

“A proper Lincolnshire sausage made to the traditional specification that was developed in the county hundreds of years ago . . .has every right to share the same status as Parma ham and champagne,” forum chair Janet Godfrey was quoted as saying.
