According to the latest UK grocery market share figures released by TNS Worldpanel, the majority of the UK’s supermarket operators are benefiting from a buoyant grocery market, the collapse of Kwik Save and the recent weakness of Somerfield.

With growth in the grocery sector of 5.3% per annum, well above inflation, most supermarkets posted strong sales results in the 12-weeks ending 25 February. Tesco has maintained its dominant position with annual growth of 8%. Each posting growth of 7%, Asda and Sainsbury’s have added 0.3% to their total market share.

“Elsewhere, Morrisons sees its tenth successive period of growth and Waitrose attains an all-time record share of 4%,” TNS director of research Edward Garner commented.

The UK is still witnessing the rise of discount chains Aldi and Lidl, who have directly benefited from the collapse of Kwik Save, acquiring both stores and consumers to attain double-digit growth.
