“When the regulations were announced last year the minister for health, Dawn Primarolo, committed to reviewing their effectiveness within one year,” a spokesperson for the FSA told just-food today (9 May).
The Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula (England) Regulations 2007 introduced a set of strict controls on the advertising and promotion of infant and follow-on formula.
“The review will be looking at whether the regulations enable shoppers to clearly differentiate between infant and follow-on formula and make sure that breastfeeding is not undermined by the products’ advertising and presentation,” the spokesperson added.
A panel of independent experts with expertise in infant nutrition, sociology, health inequalities and advertising has been appointed to conduct the review.
