The week old calf escaped the threat of slaughter by a hair’s breadth when the government announced a policy turnaround on 26 April, and was swiftly adopted by the nation as a symbol of hope during the crisis. This Christmas she is due to star in pantomime at Wimbledon Theatre, opposite leading man Shane Richie.

For Michaela and Phillip Board, Phoenix’s owners, industry experts have offered plenty of other money spinning suggestions, among which storybooks, product endorsement, children’s films and spin off chart records all figure heavily.

The stardom comes with a warning however. Phoenix’s photogenic cuteness is unlikely to last long. The calf as we know her will age quickly, and no one can predict the psychological trauma of such a short career in stardom. It could send her mad.
