The UK’s fourth-largest supermarket retailer Safeway has today [Friday] dismissed renewed speculation that it is in takeover talks with US retail giant Wal-Mart.
“We are not in talks with anybody, we’ve had no approaches and our aim is to remain independent,” a spokesman for Safeway told Reuters.
Wal-Mart subsidiary Asda, one of Safeway’s main rivals, has refused to comment on the subject.
