Chief executive Sir Peter Davis admitted that excluding petrol, Sainsbury’s like-for-like sales would have been slightly negative for the first quarter.

“I am not satisfied by our sales performance during the last two quarters,” Davis said, but later added that he was confident sales would improve.

The company said that its US Shaw’s supermarket chain achieved first-quarter like-for-like sales growth of 0.8%, adjusted for the timing of Easter.

Davis said Shaw’s continued to perform well against its US peers, but sales had been adversely affected by unusually cold and wet weather in New England.
