The company said today (20 June) that like-for-like sales for the 12 weeks to 16 June were up 4.4%.
Chief executive Justin King said Sainsbury’s had made a “strong start” to the year. “This is particularly pleasing as the quarter included some very tough comparatives in the final few weeks driven by the football world cup and the very warm weather last June,” King said.
The figures come a day after rival retailer Tesco posted a 4.7% rise in sales in the UK on an organic basis.
