Burnley joins the company from clothing chain Matalan where he is currently supply chain director. He spent his early career in retail management and buying at B&Q before joining Asda/Wal-Mart, where he held a number of positions before becoming supply chain director in 2001.

Sainsbury’s said Burnley’s starting date will be confirmed shortly. He will initially work alongside current supply chain director Christensen to ease the handover.

Christensen initially joined Sainsbury’s in September 2004 for a set term of 16 months; however, this has been extended and he will continue to support the management team in an advisory capacity until December 2006.
