UK retailer Sainsbury’s today (15 January) opened one of five planned smaller-format stores in Worksop, Nottingham as part of the grocer’s push into the convenience sector.
Of the 20 stores targeted by Sainsbury’s to be completed by the end of the group’s financial year in March, four now remain.
A “larger” small supermarket in Leeds’ Headrow Centre will open on 30 January and a Dorchester store will open in March.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told just-food it was still in talks over the remaining two but declined to reveal the budget for the new stores.
“There is certainly an acceleration in our store opening programme, with next year’s target at 50 and the following year 100. Where we are taking the convenience store operation in Sainsbury’s, we are not cutting back in any way.”
