UK retailer Sainsbury’s delivered the strongest sales growth amongst the big four, according to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel.

The retailer grew 5.4% in the 12 weeks ending 14 April, Kantar revealed today (23 April). It was also the only one to increase its market share in the last three months, to 16.9%.

Kantar said the figures show an “increasingly polarised” grocery market as Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl all posted record market shares.

“Aldi has set two records in the latest period, with its highest ever growth of 31.1% delivering a record market share of 3.4%,” said Kantar director Edward Garner. “Lidl’s market share of 3% is also an all-time high for the retailer.”

Sales at market leader Tesco were up 1%, while Asda recorded growth of 3%. Sales grew 0.3% for Morrisons but all were below overall market growth of 3.6%.

Tesco’s market share currently stands at 29.9%, Asda’s at 17.5% and Morrisons’ at 11.5%.
