Customers will be able to shop using the remote control facility of their television. They can choose from a range of more than 15,000 Sainsbury’s lines. They can also view recipes and have the opportunity to buy all of the required ingredients in one step. If they place an order before 9 o’clock in the evening, the goods should be delivered to their homes the following day.

Robin Lassiter, the supermarket chain’s director of home shopping, said: “We have linked up with NTL because they have the best platform and are a good geographic fit with our home shopping service.”

The company will typically charge a £5 (US$7.8) delivery fee, although this delivery fee will be waived for shoppers who place orders worth more than £50 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays before 21 November.

NTL’s interactive television service has around 1.2 million subscribers.
