The company said the dark store would support the development of its “rapidly-growing” online business, which reached annualised sales of GBP1bn in September.

Sainsbury’s delivers to over 190,000 customers each week and sales are growing by 15% a year. The 185,000 square foot facility will increase Sainsbury’s capacity by 20,000 customers each week.
The centre will be located in Bromley-by-Bow, East London, and will serve London and the South East.
Sainsbury’s said it would continue to pick the “majority” of its online orders from its stores but suggested the additional capacity will allow it to capitalise on growing demand.
