UK grocery chain Somerfield is widening the range of Scottish cheese products available over delicatessen counters in 39 of their Scottish stores.

The cheeses, sourced to enhance the retailer’s offering of cheddars and regional cheeses from Scottish creameries, will be on sale in Somerfield stores from 12 June.


Somerfield’s delicatessen group product manager, Rob Beale, said regional cheeses had become his priority this year with particular emphasis on Scottish regionality: “We are taking Scottish cheese seriously and launching a range from very small suppliers.


“Scottish people are fiercely passionate about local foods and very loyal to home brands. They also love their coloured cheese, which accounts for 90% of our cheese sales in Scotland.


“A survey has shown that regionality is a major growth for Somerfield and what we are doing at the moment is more in-depth than mainstream. We are trying to identify local lines of interest to our customers,” he said.

All the new listed products come from the smaller creameries such as Campbeltown, Rothesay, Arran and Orkney. The Strathdon Blue (blue veined cheese) and Drumloch hard pressed wax cheese are from smaller independent creameries at Campbeltown, in Kintyre and at Tain in the north of Scotland.
