UK grocery retailer Somerfield has said it plans to spend £70m (US$118.8m) on new store formats.

The company did not give details about the features of the new formats, or how many new stores it plans to open. The first of the new store formats is to be unveiled within the next few weeks.

A spokeswoman for Somerfield said the stores will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and be an important part of the company’s strategy, reported Retail Week.

Separately, the company opened its first new-build City Fresh store, a format that focuses on fresh and chilled produce and ready meals. The new store is situated in Manchester’s Piccadilly area.
