J.C. Hormel started producing Spam in Austin, Minnesota in 1937 when he decided to apply beer canning technology to can the meat.


Sixty-five years on, the product has gained an international following and Hormel Foods has registered the brand in 111 countries.


Vicki McDonald, head of the UK’s 2,000-strong Spam fan club, told Reuters: “We’re trying to take it to a new audience […] there’s a certain amount of Spam nostalgia out there.”
