One Sainsbury’s store in Bristol was forced to discard much of its frozen food range as freezers failed to keep temperatures low enough to ensure the food was safe to sell. The frozen food section of the store in Brislington was cordoned off while staff offloaded food into trolleys before it was disposed of, reported the Western Daily Press.

Store manager Robin Ireland said overworked fans built in to the freezers had failed to keep temperatures cool enough and he had no option but to throw away the goods. He said he had been forced to dump thousands of pounds worth of stock.

This will offset the gains supermarkets have made from bumper sales of barbecue sets, soft drinks and electric fans, not to mention picnic food.
