Northern Ireland’s number one crisp manufacturer Tayto today (11 January) confirmed interest in the purchase of fallen rival Golden Wonder. The company entered into negotiations with Kroll, Golden Wonder’s administrator, after Golden Wonder went into administration on Monday (9 January).

A company spokesperson told just-food that although it was sad to see Golden Wonder go into administration, it was a good opportunity for Tayto and other companies.

Tayto recently landed a GBP£10m deal with Tesco to produce the supermarket’s own-brand crisps. Prior to this, the company invested GBP£7m in up-grading its production capability.

The company spokesperson confirmed that there remained a surplus production capability, which could potentially be used to manufacture Golden Wonder brands. However, Tayto emphasised that nothing has yet been finalised.
