Irish snack food group Tayto is still interested in acquiring the Golden Wonder brand, despite agreeing a deal last week to buy the company’s Corby plant, which did not include any of the UK group’s brand names.

Stephen Hutchinson, managing director of Irish snack manufacturer Tayto, on Friday (13 January) confirmed the company’s acquisition of the Golden Wonder factory in Corby and the contract to make Pringles’ Minis for Procter & Gamble, but in an interview with just-food he has said that Tayto still hoped to get the Golden Wonder brand.

Procter & Gamble production will remain in Corby and the contracts of 195 employees at the site will be transferred from Golden Wonder to Tayto, he said. Corby will also continue to fulfil Golden Wonder’s own-brand contracts while the company is in administration.

Although Hutchinson said that Tayto had been involved in negotiations for the brand, he told just-food that administrator Kroll had decided not to sell. But, Hutchinson said, the company still views the acquisition in a very positive light.

“The Corby factory is a very good facility and has seen a lot of investment over the years. Initially, the major interest for us was the Procter & Gamble contract,” Hutchinson said. Revealing that Tayto had already been bidding for Procter & Gamble contracts before Golden Wonder was placed in administration, he expressed the company’s hope that this partnership would continue to develop and blossom in the future.

“As yet, we have no plans to produce anything other than Pringles’ Minis from Corby, but there is room for growth. Supply of Pringles’ Minis is outstripped by demand,” Hutchinson observed. Procter & Gamble have had to cut some advertising funds in order to control this, he said. Demand is also expected to increase when Pringles’ Minis, currently only on sale in the UK, are launched in the rest of Europe.  “We have a long-term contract with Procter & Gamble and we hope to build on that,” Hutchinson stated.

Tayto are still involved in active negotiations with Kroll regarding the Golden Wonder brand, Hutchinson told just-food.
