Tesco and Asda lost market share during the 12 weeks to 11 July despite “aggressive” promotions during the football World Cup, the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel has claimed.

During the period, UK grocery sales increased 4.4% thanks to the World Cup and the warm weather in the country.

Sales at Tesco, the UK’s largest retailer, climbed 3.8% and were up 3.1% at Asda, meaning both retailers saw their market share eroded, Kantar said.

Menawhile, Sainsbury’s sales increased 5.3%, while Morrisons drove sales by 6.6%.

Tesco’s market share was 30.7%, followed by Asda at 16.8%. Sainsbury’s, the UK’s third-largest retailer, had a market share of 16.1%, while Morrisons had a market share of 11.8%.

Food inflation stood at 1.7% during the 12 weeks to 11 July, Kantar said.

“We’ve seen consumers spending at the fastest rate since Christmas, taking advantage of extremely competitive promotions on traditional summer items such as beer and barbecue foods. On top of that, grocery inflation remains subdued which means shoppers’ money goes a little bit further in their weekly shop,” said Kantar retail analyst Fraser McKevitt.
