UK supermarket giant Tesco has continued to increase its dominance of the UK market, taking a 29.1% share in the latest period.

According to figures from TNS, Tesco’s 29.1% market share in the 12 weeks to 30 January was marginally higher than a month earlier, and up from 26.8% in the year-ago period, reported Reuters.
Tesco’s main rival, Asda, owned by US giant Wal-Mart, now has a 17.1% share, while third-placed Sainsbury increased its market share again and now has 16%, although it is still down on the year-ago period.
Fourth-placed Wm Morrison, which merged with Safeway last year, now has a combined market share of 12.4%, level with a month earlier, Reuters said.
Somerfield, which this week announced it has received a takeover approach from Icelandic group Baugur, currently has a 5.4% market share and lies in fifth place.
