The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today [Wednesday] upheld a complaint from internet retailer Amazon.co.uk that British supermarket behemoth Tesco misled the public when it claimed that its online range of DVDs, music and books were cheaper than those sold through the Amazon website.

In a bid to gain the Christmas sales, Tesco claimed in national newspapers and brochures that, “www.tesco.com is 10% cheaper than Amazon.co.uk on chart books”.


The ASA ruling, which does not carry a penalty, agreed with Amazon that the claims were unspecific and therefore misleading.
