The move comes as part of the retail giant’s attempt to reduce plastic bag usage by 1bn bags within the next 12 months.

Under the scheme, groceries will arrive in stackable, reusable, plastic trays, which will be taken away by the driver. Consumers who chose to shun carrier bags will be rewarded with additional Clubcard loyalty points, Tesco said.

Laura Wade-Gery, of Tesco’s Internet arm, said: “Delivery without bags is both a win for our customers and the environment.”

Tesco is the latest in a line of UK retailers to attempt to reduce carrier bag usage, which is viewed as a waste of energy and bad for the environment.
