Leading UK multiple retailer Tesco yesterday [Wednesday] said that sales of organic foods were up 30% on last year.
The group interpreted the rise as evidence that British consumers are willing to pay the premium price tag associated with organics for what they perceive to be a healthier option.
Tesco claims to account for almost 30% of the country’s organic food market, currently worth around £240m (US$346.5m) per year, and said it was on track to hit its £1bn sales target defined last year.
The group now offers shoppers almost 1200 organic product, ranging from jam to biscuits as well as the more traditional, fruit & veg, meat and dairy products.
Corporate affairs direct Lucy Neville-Rolfe commented: “There are many exciting developments to come this year with further product launches such as organic ready-made sandwiches for people on the move and a range of Fairtrade organic speciality teas from Cafédirect.”
