Tesco has shrugged off the media reports that its “secret chain” of One Stop convenience stores charges consumers more for products “by stealth”.

The company, which operates 520 One Stop convenience stores in the UK in addition to its network of Tesco branded stores, was accused of charging consumers up to 14% more for products in areas where it faces less local competition.

“Tesco charges higher prices by stealth in areas where it faces less local competition,” a report in The Times claimed today (22 March).

However, a spokesperson for Tesco insisted this afternoon that it does not operate a plural pricing system because the One Stop chain is a seperate business.

“One Stop was an established business when we bought it,” the spokesperson told just-food. “It is a different business with its own supply chain and distribution network. It has contracts with suppliers that are totally separate from Tesco.”

Tesco acquired One Stop in 2003. About 450 of the store network was converted to the Tesco Express convenience banner while the remaining stores continued to be operated under the One Stop banner.
