“We are making changes to our distribution network to meet our needs and really we need a larger distribution centre,” Tony Fletcher, a spokesperson for Tesco told just-food. “Middlewich isn’t suitable for expansion. We already have large distribution centres in Livingstone and Lichfield and obviously they are able to cope with the volume in conjunction with our units at Chesterfield.”

The retailer said it hopes that no jobs will be lost with the closure, adding that it will encourage staff to “consider alternative jobs” within Tesco.

Fletcher said the retailer hopes to create over 2,000 jobs in the North West thsi year.
