British supermarket behemoth Tesco has been fined more than any other high street for environment offences last year, according to figures released by the Environment Agency this week.

The Agency, which operates as a pollutant regulator, noted that Tesco was fined £30,000 for failing to prevent people leaving shopping trolleys in a river in Chelmsford.
Overall, the Agency saw improvements in air and water quality across England and Wales. Most regulated air emissions fell during the course of 2001, it said, and companies from the chemical, power, and metals sector were largely responsible for this.
Baroness Barbara Young, CEO of the Agency, told the Financial Times: “The high street needs to take environmental good practice as seriously as anyone else.”
