Tulip, the UK arm of meat co-op Danish Crown, has today (8 March) confirmed that it will close its site in Birkenhead on the Wirral.
The company said it has been working to try and address a number of issues at the loss-making facility since acquiring the business in 2011. However, this has proved “far more difficult that first envisaged”, it said.

As a result, Tulip said has ceased all production at the Tranfoods site.
“There have been a number of operational issues with the Abbey Street site that has meant we have had to take the very difficult decision to cease all production as from today,” COO Peter Judge said.
“Although everyone at Tranfoods has been working very hard, the operational difficulties have proven to be far greater than first envisaged and have left us with no viable option other than to cease production.”
Judge said the company’s priority now will be to “find ways in which to lessen the impact” of the decision and that it will be “working closely with everyone at the site”.
