The council stressed that, for people, the risk of catching avian flu comes from being in close contact with live poultry that have the disease, and not through eating cooked poultry or eggs. A spokesman added that the BPC is not aware of any reports of people handling poultry meat getting infected.
Last year, around 24m turkeys were produced in the UK. Ten million of these were eaten at Christmas. The British Poultry Council is working with retailers and butchers to reassure consumers this Christmas that they can enjoy British turkey with full confidence.
Posters and fliers in supermarkets and butchers will attempt to spread the message to shoppers that British turkey is safe to eat as well as being healthy.
