The Tetra Recart weighs just 18g, in comparison with 50g to 200g for comparable packs. It is a paperboard carton made from FSC-certified wood fibre from “well-managed forests and controlled sources”, according to Tetra Pak.
Tetra Pak said the package’s rectangular shape reduces carbon impact, as it is highly space-efficient during transportation and storage, using 33% less space than a can.
Sainsbury’s is the first supermarket in the world to carry the Tetra Recart package, and will initially use the carton for its own-label Premium Chopped Tomatoes.
“Tetra Pak firmly believes that being environmentally responsible is the basis of good business,” said Claes Du Rietz, vice president global environment at Tetra Pak. “Launching the world’s first FSC-labelled carton for liquid and canned food is a first step in a long and complicated process of having third-party certification for the entire value chain of our all our packages.”
