Proposals under consideration could result in poultry meat that is deemed unfit for human consumption being stained with indelible inks.


Last month’s seizure of 40 tonnes of meat destined for pet food, which ended up on sale in processed products such as chicken nuggets and meat pasties at supermarkets, restaurants and schools, highlighted an illegal trade in poultry deemed unfit to eat. These products have already been traced and withdrawn from sale.


The UK’s biggest chicken producers have already decided voluntarily to stain poultry that is not for the human food chain.
