Unilever UK has recalled Bovril Beef Extract from a number of retailers because of the presence of salmonella.

The recall, announced today (14 August), includes Bovril Beef Extract 250g and 60g with a best before date of January 2010.

A spokesperson for Unilever UK told just-food: “We are still investigating as to how the salmonella got into the extract but as soon as we found traces we removed them. Over the coming days we should have a better idea.”

No other Unilever UK products are known to be affected but the company is urging consumers to check the batch number and date on all Bovril Beef Extract products.
