The man in charge of Tesco’s US venture has reportedly ruled himself out of contention to succeed Sir Terry Leahy as the company’s chief executive.

Tim Mason, who is leading the UK’s retailer push into the States, told the Financial Times that he had no plans to put himself up for the top job.


Mason, 50, said he was too old for the CEO position and added that the role would go to a younger candidate, the FT said.


Speculation over Sir Terry’s successor had centred on Mason after the Tesco boss appointed Mason to lead Tesco’s Fresh & Easy business in the US.


Tesco has has opened 15 Fresh & Easy outlets in Las Vegas, San Diego, Phoenix and Los Angeles and is aiming to have 200 outlets in the US by 2009.
