UK upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose today (5 January) announced a near-4% rise in underlying sales over the Christmas period.

The company said its grocery sales for December rose 9.5% over the same period in 2010. Its like-for-like sales increased 3.8%.

Compared with the same period in 2009, Waitrose said, grocery sales grew by 19.1% and like-for-like sales were up by 8.8%

The supermarket claimed “record-breaking” sales in the week before Christmas, achieving its highest ever sales for a single week.

Waitrose also announced its “strongest online Christmas yet”, and said sales through Waitrose.com rose 49% in the seven days before Christmas.

MD Mark Price said: “More customers than ever before shopped across all our ranges this Christmas, from luxurious festive fare to essential Waitrose trimmings. We’ve had a very strong Christmas.”
