UK upmarket retailer Waitrose has received approval for the acquisition of five supermarkets.

The retailer announced in June that it will acquire three stores in Jersey and two in Guernsey from Channel Island retailer Sandpiper CI.

The firm said today (25 August): “We are delighted to have received approval from the JCRA to open our shops in Jersey. We look forward to opening our shops in both islands in early 2011.”

The shops, which will provide over 130,000sq ft of selling space, will open as Waitrose in a phased programme in early 2011. No financial details were disclosed.
